Prior to working in graphic communications, I’ve been involved in the arts one way or another my whole life.

There is not. However, we do offer passengers with flights of 3 hours or longer one specialty tea or coffee.

Not exactly. Let me explain first:

Just in case you’re not familiar with price lists in this industry, they usually go something like this:

‘Design Packages Starting From $1200 – you’ll get 2 to 3 versions of a logo design showcasing different font choices, icons/watermarks, and/or alternate colours. There will be a set amount of revisions to your final choice, and then file preparation for print material and social media images…’

They typically go into more detail and offer you other bundles to choose from: basic, premium, or even platinum packages. Be prepared, it’s probably going to cost you more than the base starting price.

I’m not trying to say this pricing model doesn’t work for design companies/freelancers, it just doesn’t work for Cardboard Spaceship. Client’s needs vary on the regular, and we’ll gladly help out others who know they only need a couple of fixings, and not the whole enchilada.

On the contrary, we’re happy to help clients who need all of the creative guidance they can get. That being said, we’re not here to oversell you on services that don’t fit your budget, or are not imperative to getting your project off the ground… another reason why price lists do not work for us.

If your budget is big or small, or even if your budget doesn’t exist yet, there’s no harm in finding out whether we’re a good fit for one another. Get in touch with Mission Control today!

One day it would be nice to have employees where the word ‘we’ would seem to make more sense, however, Cardboard Spaceship is it’s own Corporation and I, Danny, am a part of that. Together, we are the business.

As an individual, I may run the ship, but I prefer that you recommend/promote the company name over the name of the owner. If there comes a time that I retire from the business, I would like to hand the keys over to someone else who shares the same passion and business values as I do.

Also, I was told once that if you start a business and you’re the only person behind the steering wheel, using the word ‘we’ makes you sound more legit. So there’s that too. 😁

When it comes to all graphic and web design projects, it’s just me. As for web development, I do a lot of the work here too. More specifically, I have put together event scheduling web pages, blogs, portfolios/CV websites, and E-commerce ones as well. The work I tend to outsource is when I need something that requires coding knowledge beyond my current expertise.

This means I become your Project Manager, Creative Director, your Senior Graphic Designer, Web Designer/Developer, and of course the dreaded Bill Collector! If your name is Bill, sorry dude, I’m coming for you!

Project management and multi-tasking come naturally to me, but what I really love about this, and I think you will too, is that I become heavily invested in your project. I will be the one person who gets to know everything about your vision, and therefore your only point of contact. There are no wait/hold times to get in touch with a specific department… it’s just me.

More specifically: I am Graphic Designer who learned how to use online tools to create websites that harness the power of a Content Management System (ex. Squarespace, Shopify, WordPress). These CMS websites give the site owner the functionality to log into the backend of their web domain in order to make changes/updates on the fly.

They are extremely user friendly, and they have the added benefit of allowing our clients to save on costs, should they be interested in making these changes themselves.

So over the years Cardboard Spaceship has become exclusive to using WordPress as our Content Management System. It’s extremely friendly for graphic designers who like to dabble in the web development side of things, who are not afraid to understand how different coding languages work, and to have a better understanding of what they are providing their clients.

With WordPress we can easily create a website from a blank canvas, or take a pre-made template and tailor it to your brand. It is also quite flexible when it comes to working with different company sizes. Whether it’s a small start-up, or an established business, WordPress can handle a lot of demanding website necessities from all types of clients.

We also offer web hosting, and when it comes to hosting a WordPress website, it is significantly less money than the the fees of paid CMS services like Squarespace, Shopify, and some others that shall not be named. Each has their own purpose though, and for what I love to work on, WordPress checks off all of my boxes.

We do, however, this is tailored towards clients who want us to manage their web hosting for them.

Typically, once a website is complete, it’s rare that you need to access your web hosting client. Our rates reflect this, and this is something you shouldn’t overpay for.

To learn more about our Canadian web hosting, and our out-of-this world rates, please feel free to get in touch.

Let’s be honest, you didn’t ask this, but it tends to come up more often than not.

Here’s the real question: How long does a project take once it starts?

This depends on what your project needs are, but our turn-around times are outstanding.

We also take on projects with very tight deadlines, but we will never take on more than we can handle, especially if we think it will jeopardize the quality of our work. When you need to accelerate a project in a shorter time frame than normal, if applicable we will go into warp speed/hyper drive.

This just means we will extend our hours outside of our usual operating time (burn more fuel) in which we
charge accordingly.

We require a 50% deposit up front and after that we set up milestone payments based on your project deadline.

Of course, this can be negotiated based on your budget and project requirements.

Most of the time we use a 50%/25%/25% payment method, or a 1/3 model for larger projects.

And now the question you have all been waiting for (if you choose to read past the first line, just a heads up, it’s approximately a 3-4 min read).

$70 per hour CAD$ +GST (5%)

Sub-question: How did you come up with this rate?

Well when I first started out I was charging $50 per hour, which was fair, because at that time I was a Junior Graphic Designer let alone a Junior Entrepreneur.

Overtime I got better, brought in more clients, and I learned a little bit more about the business side of things. Naturally my rate went up and I started to include a different rate for my family and friends.

At one point my rate was $100 per hour, and if you have done your research, it’s not uncommon for freelancers and bigger companies to charge more than this amount (keep in mind, many different businesses have several different overhead expenses to cover compared to Cardboard Spaceships’).

For instance, if you need a design company to invite you into their fancy boardroom… well then you’ve come to the wrong launching pad. That’s just added weight during space travel.

Plus, strip me down to the bare bones and you’ll discover I’m an artist at heart. I want to be surrounded by your company culture, and get a good feeling of what you’re planning to create. That experience helps to inspire the design process, so if you become our client who already has the fancy board room, then we’ll fly right on over.

And don’t worry, if you’re not at board room status yet (or even if you don’t go down that route) I hope you consider hiring us to work on your creative projects.

Side note: I prefer an office that I can bring back and forth to the mountains.

So why $70?

To be honest, I want to test the waters with our rate and I want it to fluctuate in a fair manner. In this case, it may go up at some point, but proper communication channels for that kind of thing will always be a number one priority.

Ultimately in the end, I don’t get to keep all of my earnings. I have to pay my taxes, my optometrist, my dental bills, and I also need some vacation time.

For now, my rate has come down, and this should help explain why:

If I told you that I can’t remember the last time I printed out an invoice for a client, do you immediately think of our cost savings? More than likely, no.

Granted, we’re not saving millions, but it does mean less printer paper, less printer ink, and even going through less printers for that matter. Ultimately, technology and software has helped our company save time and money, and as a consumer, don’t you want to be on the receiving end of that, even if it is a just a couple of dollars?

And yes, I understand the cost of living, and perhaps you even think I’m committing a Business 101 crime, but if we’re not on the same page here; then that’s what this FAQ is all about. We need to find out if we should be working together before you sign any contracts.

Furthermore, Covid 2020 has impacted all of us in different ways. If my hourly rate can go up, shouldn’t it be able to come down. This is just a part of how I want to give back to the community, and how I would like to consume less, and leave this world better than how I found it.

It’s also a personal lifestyle choice. Here’s some food for thought:

If you find that you have saved a little bit of money by hiring a business like Cardboard Spaceship, you should try and make a notable effort to seek out and support other small businesses. Heck, put these savings toward your self care and get that therapeutic massage you’ve been putting off. Our mental health is very important, but that’s a whole other topic.

While on my end, if I charge less than $100+ per hour, I will have to cut back on some things too. For instance, ordering pizza 😂.  It’s time for Danny to culture the F up over here and get to an Italian centre for those fresh ingredients and make that Za at home! And who doesn’t like the added flavour of their own elbow grease!?

In conclusion, we charge $70 per hour. For everyone.

To quote an exact cost is too difficult without knowing what your needs are. However, based on previous projects, we can at least try to shed some light on the subject.

Logos: $250 – $1200+ with the lower amount usually correlating to a client that knows exactly what they are wanting but just lacks the tools to create it themselves. Then the larger amount tends to lean towards clients that have more than one stakeholder in the company (with more eyes on the project), or clients that are looking to see alternate versions, and perhaps custom illustration work and/or more options.

Web Design & Development: $500+. Web design and development costs can vary, even lower than what was quoted here, but once again this comes down to a clients’ individual needs. How customized do you want your website, and does it need more than just the usual bells and whistles?

Personally, I find the best way to think about it is to picture whether or not you see your logo or website being completed in an 8 hour work day. Both can be done without sacrificing the quality of workmanship, but it tends to limit the amount of customization that can go into the design work, as well, you’re typically coming to us with all of your creative ducks in a row.

No matter what your needs may be, we are always interested in building new client relationships. Get to know more about Cardboard Spaceship below, and please do not hesitate to get in touch with our Mission Control if you have any unanswered questions.

About Danny

A more formal introduction:

Graduating with High Honours in Graphic Communications, as well as being surrounded by small business owners my whole life; it almost seemed inevitable that I would find myself on a journey that both satisfied my artsy fartsy heart, and an instilled passion to succeed at starting my own business.

I’ve been involved in the arts one way or another, my whole life. Both on the visual side and the performing side. I have taken many different art classes over the years as well; from photography to pottery, and painting on my iPad to painting on watercolour paper.

My life outside of Cardboard Spaceship… doesn’t stray too far away from the creative lane either. You can find me walking dogs on the daily where I love to bring a camera along to catch the little monsters in action! I also love getting lost in a rabbit hole of design and technology videos on youtube, gathering new knowledge and useful information toward my trade. And lastly, depending on the day of the week, I’ll be in my camper van soaking up the scenery, driving the small town route, searching for new creative adventures.
